The Shakespeare, Liverpool | review

There's a couple of places in Liverpool to get pub grub, and that's definitely a good thing: if you're in a rush or on a budget, you don't have to miss out on great food. The Shakespeare in Williamson Square invited me to try out their new menu, and they definitely didn't disappoint...

The decor is warm and cosy, and the bar has an extensive range of drinks; they have Rekorderlig on draught, and plenty of lagers, ales, gins and other spirits to choose from at decent prices. Put it this way, you're not going to be spending a tenner on two pints like you might in a pub in Manchester. We pored over the menu for a while, and someone came to take our order - I opted for the chicken pot pie and P chose the steak and ale pie.

Our food arrived quickly and was piping hot; both pies had plenty of meat in them, so there was no scrimping out to save money which is something I always look out for. My pie was absolutely delicious and the chips it came with were amazing - proper thick, home-made chunky chips. Honestly just a good, proper, homely meal that was filling and genuinely tasted nice. The chicken pot pie is £6.95 and the steak & ale pie is £7.95 which I think is really reasonable, too.

We were both feeling pretty stuffed but I'd spotted homemade Kinder Bueno cheesecake on the menu and I knew I had to try it, as a lover of both cheesecake and Kinder Buenos. It comes with fresh cream, which I hate so I asked for it without - they brought it out a few minutes later on a slate instead of a plate, which I thought was pretty fancy for a pub, and then I tucked in. It was amazing! Really thick tasty cheesecake, not too sweet or sickly but full of flavour and very much worth the £395 price tag. You could definitely come in just for cheesecake and a pint in the afternoon, which I think is a brilliant way to pass the time.

So, that was my experience at The Shakespeare; if you're looking for cheap pub food in Liverpool city centre that actually tastes nice, this is definitely where to head for!
