How I stay creative...

As it goes, I'm a very creative person - I'm rubbish at art. but I love drawing nonetheless, and writing is my absolute passion. Sometimes I lack the motivation to be creative but when I get back into it, I kick myself for ever having stopped. I thought I'd discuss what helps me stay on the creative side of life.

My main inspiration comes from other people - reading blogs from creative people and scouring Tumblr, Pinterest or Instagram to read other people's poetry and see what wonderful things other people have drawn/made/painted/sculpted etc. I re-read my favourite books and poems, and stare for hours at my favourite pictures.

I love getting feedback on my own writing: I post my poetry on here, and my friends & family are often subjected to reading it too. I studied creative writing at uni, and part of our seminars were always dedicated to reviewing each others' work. It creates such a sense of vulnerability but it's amazing when somebody tells you they like what you've written.

Colouring books always give a boot up the bum to be creative again - I have sooo many now, originally intended to aid my anxiety/give me something to do when I can't sleep, but now I find myself reaching for them all the time. You can find them in supermarkets and book shops alike nowadays, and I'd highly recommend them!

Music always encourages me to get my creative side out again - new songs always give me a fresh little burst of life and make me want to create my own things. Foot tapping away I'll be doodling in my sketchbook or scribbling down rhyming words!

What are your tips for staying creative? I'd love to know!

  1. This has actually made me really think about my own creativity. Hmm.. I used to be soo creative as a kid, always drawing and making things but I don't really know about now. Your poems are very powerful by the way, you are super talented.

  2. No word of a lie, I SWEAR DOWN right- I thought I'd pop by because your tweet to Danielle prompted me to think, ooh I'll visit Katy. And then to see you actually mentioned me!? Oh that's just so bloody nice!
I know what you mean about getting into it though! If I stop and then start again I fume at myself a bit for ever stopping haha. It's lovely to see how others are creative; it's such a cool thing where creativity can be done in SO many ways! <3
You are a brilliant writer, and all around inspiring person; so keep that creative side up miss! ^__^ <3
