If you're a regular blog read you will have seen alllll of the home content I've been posting throughout this year, which has been *a lot* - my plans have changed slightly what with the frankly crazy turmoil the mortgage world is in right now, but I still have home content to share including this collaborative guest post which you can read below...
We all want our homes to look beautiful. We want to create a space that matches our taste and shows other people that we have excellent style instincts too. Unfortunately, many of us are making various home decor mistakes that make our homes look ugly.
If you want to avoid the pitfalls that drag your home down into ugliness, you first need to know what they are, so let’s take a look at some of the most common offenders below.
1. Too much clutter
It’s an obvious point, but when you have too many things in your home, and not enough space to store them neatly, your home will start to look ugly and unkempt. Look into bin truck hire, get your Marie Kondo on, and get rid of anything that isn’t beautiful or important to you, and it will make a huge difference to your home decor.
2. Vertical blinds
Vertical blinds are very commonly seen in many homes as part of the decor, and they always make the place seem colder, more clinical, and more office-like than a space where you can really rest and relax. If you need them, then Roman blinds of plantation shutters give a much warmer, modern feel to the space, that is actually homely and not at all corporate as vertical blinds are.
3. Visible wires
We all have so many wires and cords in our homes due to the huge number of gadgets, from TVs and computers to phones and Sky boxes, that we all have in our home, When these wires are visible, the space looks messy and clinical, which is why using various techniques, from well-positioned rugs to using cord organisers, is so important if your want your space to look and feel as pretty as possible.
4. Fluorescent lighting
Thankfully, most of us no longer have fluorescent lighting strips in our homes, but if your home is older, you may well have them in the kitchen or bathrooms, in particular. If this is so, then replacing them with something softener is a really good idea because not only do they show your home in the harshest possible light, but they have been connected to causing headaches in the home too.
5. Old carpets
Old carpets and rugs tend to lose their sumptuousness and the vibrancy of the patterns that are woven into their very fabric. When this happens, they can really make your home look ugly because they look unkempt and unloved. It is a good idea, then to see if you can bring them back to life by cleaning them with a professional carpet cleaning machine, If this does not work, replacing them or covering them up as best you can, will definitely help your space to feel less ugly.
6. Unwashed windows
If the windows are dirty, you can’t get a nice clear view of the pretty garden and the sun will filter through in a less than perfect way, get them washed! This should deal with the dirty glass, but what if the window frames are dirty? A lot of people overlook this, but your dirty and possibly rotten or mould-ridden frames aren’t doing you any favours. To change this, start by measuring your windows. Then, look at getting a window replacement to refresh your home and improve the way it looks.
If you can avoid making these ugly mistakes, your home will be 100 percent more stylish and you will be able to enjoy it so much more.
