5 things to do in Puerto de la Cruz

I have just got home from an all-inclusive break in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. I went for a budget chill-out holiday with one of my best friends, and we just loved the area. It's in the north of the island, which is much less touristy than the south, but there was still plenty to do...

Visit Mount Teide

This is a volcano, which hasn't erupted since 1909 - and when we were there it was covered in snow. We were still able to go up it, however they *did* say it would likely close to visitors that afternoon so be sure to double check. We paid 26 euros for a bus trip, which picked us up from our hotel and drove us to & then up Mount Teide. This is easily one of the best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz! Our first stop was Corona Forest, which was cold and green and pretty, and then it was back on the bus to the snowy hills. The final stop was at Roque Cinchado, a really cool rock formation where apparently they have filmed a lot of 'spaghetti westerns'. It was sooooooo good.

Botanical Gardens

We almost missed out on visiting the Botanical Gardens but I'm so glad we went. You can wander it all in under an hour, or take a book and a drink with you to chill out there - it's such a pretty, peaceful location. There are plants of all varieties, and I met a very large fluffy bee flying around too! It only cost us 3 euros each, which is such a bargain in my opinion. Something a bit different to break up all the sunbathing, anyway...

Wander the Old Town

One of the best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz is just walk around the old town area. It's so colourful, meaning you can take some really gorgeous photos if you want to, and there's plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to stop at. Make sure you look up as well as straight ahead, as there are some gorgeous buildings here.

Go for shisha

There are a few options for shisha in Puerto de la Cruz, and we tried two of them. The first one we went to was Le Duque; we got a taxi here from out hotel, but there was some confusion here. The driver dropped us off at the address Google offers, but this was actually around a 2 minute walk away from the bar itself. We wouldn't have minded were it not for the torrential rain... Regardless, when we arrived at Le Duque we fell in *love*. The atmosphere was so calm and lovely, and the staff couldn't do enough for us. I imagine if it was summer this place wwould be bouncing; it has its own pool outside! The cocktails were pure works of art, and we got free shots with our shisha too. 10/10 would recommend to anyong visiting Puerto de la Cruz, even if you don't want to actually have any shisha.

We also went to Arena Shisha Bar, which is somewhere a bit more central. It was Saturday night when we went, so it was fairly busy, and the shisha is upstairs. We got to sit in the window which was nice, and there was a deal on for shisha and two drinks. They also did cocktails, nothing too fancy, and the atmosphere wasn't as nice here but definitely still enjoyable!

Agatha Christie steps

I love a bit of Agatha Christie, and these colourful steps - painted to look like her books - were so stunning. They make for a fantastic photo opp, but regardless they're just so cool to see. She lived here for a while, and there's a few Agatha Christie-related things around the area. We tried to Google Map our way to the steps but this took us down a side road with a dead end - we had to keep on going for quite a while, after passing this side road on our right, but we found them eventually. If you ask, people will know where you mean! I loved seeing these; they are a really lovely addition to the area in my opinion and it was lovely to see people enjoying them.

There are, of course, plenty of other things to do in and near Puerto de la Cruz. We also visited the mall (they have a Lefties, which is essentially a Zara outlet) and ate ham & cheese croissants at the *lovely* Pizzeria Europa. We missed out on going to the black sand beach in the end, but this is definitely on my list for if I ever go back!
