(AD) Summer hair care tips

The weather is all over the place at the moment but we are getting some hot and sunny days now which is such a treat - I think we all deserve a bit of loveliness! I want to share my summer hair care tips going forward into sunnier times; if you have any more feel free to share them in the comments below so we can all have gorgeous locks as we slowly start to emerge into the new normal...

Don't wash your hair every single day

I see this debate going round Twitter every few months but you really shouldn't wash your hair every day - there are exceptions to this, obviously, but generally you should do it every couple of days. If you wash it every day there's no time for your hair to replenish its natural oils, which leads to breakage and a dull look, and it fades your colour quicker. Plus the more you wash your hair, the more you'll need/want to use heat on it.

Use as little heat as possible

Leading on from the end of that last tip, try not to use heat on your hair. Towel dry it and add some product then let it air dry - and if you need to style it, there are plenty of tutorials for how to style your hair with no heat. Apparently you can use the tie of your dressing gown to curl your hair now? 2020 is wild. If you do use heat to dry and/or style your hair, make sure you use a decent heat protectant to ensure you're not causing too much damage.

✨ BONUS TIP ✨ Use a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel to dry your hair, as it absorbs water but doesn't have the roughness that causes frizz. This hack is especially favoured by those with really curly hair, and it's a great way to repurpose an old t-shirt rather than throwing it out.

Protect your hair from the sun

As we do start to experience warmer days, it's important that you protect your hair from the sun as much as your skin - we all know how vital it is to go out with SPF on our face and body in the summer (and all year round, really) but our hair is often forgotten. UV hair protectants come in the form of dry oils and sprays, and well ensure that your hair doesn't get fried by the sunshine. If you're lucky enough to be reading this from somewhere hotter than England then make sure you pay attention to this one! Wearing a hat protects your hair from the sun, too, and it's another fashion accessory to add to your wardrobe...

Do regular hair masks

Even if you really look after your hair, everyone can benefit from doing a hair mask. You can make your own from ingredients you've likely already got in your kitchen cupboard, or head to the supermarket/drugstore and pick one up for relatively cheap. It's a nice way to give yourself some weekly TLC and give your hair a little boost.

So there's my summer hair care tips - what are yours?

  1. I need to invest in some nice hair masks! I used to use coconut oil which was fab. I also didn't know about using a cotton tshirt instead of a towel - thanks for that!

  2. I saw that towel curling video the other week, so strange! I've been letting my hair air dry quite a lot during lockdown and just embracing my natural waviness. Something that I never do, however, is use a hair mask. I definitely need to try them out! x

  3. These are great tips! I've been following the first one a lot - I used to wash my hair every other day, but since lockdown I've managed to make it to 3 days in between, bonus.
I hadn't heard about drying hair with a cotton t-shirt, I'll have to try that out x
