Honest Burgers, Liverpool | review

You might know if you follow me on socials, or know me 'IRL', but I've recently started to cut out gluten. I've had unexplained chronic stomach pain for around 18 months and it's slowly killing me, so I'm willing to try anything at this point and cutting out gluten was high on my list. But I've been missing bread. I've actually cried because I miss bread so much, which might seem ridiculous but that's just who I am. So when Honest Burgers in Liverpool invited me to try out their menu and I spotted gluten-free burgers on there, I was on the bus as quickly as possible...

Honest Burgers, Liverpool

Located on Bold Street in the city centre, home to all the the best food haunts in town, Honest Burgers is a bright and spacious venue with local art on the walls, some booths/bench style seating an some higher tables. The menus are made from coffee and food that has been rescued from landfill and somehow recycled into paper, and they do juice made from wonky fruit to reduce food waste. We love an eco-conscious restaurant chain!

I ordered the chicken burger on a gluten free bun, which comes with their signature rosemary salted chips. P went for the chilli beef burger, which again comes with the rosemary salted chips, and we shared a side of onion rings.

Side note: all the sides at Honest Burgers are gluten free!

So, what was the verdict? My burger was a grilled chicken breast with lettuce, tomato and mustard mayonnaise - the chicken was well cooked and I liked the sauce too, even though I'm not generally a mayo fan. The gluten free bun was delicious too; sometimes I find gluten free 'bread' products to be a bit dense or crumbly but this was spot on, and I was over the moon to be eating bread again! The chips were delicious too. I love rosemary and it works SO well on chips. Spot on!

P loved the chill beef burger too, and it was just the right amount of spicy with the burger being perfectly cooked. Their beef burgers come cooked medium as standard, but they're happy to cook it however you want if you ask! The onion rings were massive - each one was almost the size of my face - and they were utterly delicious. Some of the best onion rings I've ever had, honestly.

We each had a coke, and the total of our meal would have been £28.50 - I don't think this is too bad at all. The portion sizes are decent without being OTT, and the food was genuinely some of the best I've had in ages. Obviously it's more pricey than a trip to McDonald's, but it's around the same price as a Five Guys and really it's a lot better than that.

The manager also popped over for a chat and told us how their kitchen is completely free of some of the major allergens like peanut and egg, so that people with allergies have less to worry about. I think this is smashing, honestly, and makes life so much easier for a lot of people. Definitely don't hesitate to have a chat with them if you have a food allergy or intolerance! There's vegan options too, and they look just as good as the meat.

So, all in all, I was thoroughly impressed with Honest Burgers. If you're looking for a gluten free burger in Liverpool that will leave you feeling full and satisfied, look no further.
