September/October 2024 recent reads

I already shared a few of my September reads in this post but it's been a while, so I thought I'd update you all with the rest of the books I read last month & the first couple from this month, and what I thought of them in my usual quickfire review style! Let me know if you've read any of these and what you thought of them, of course...

Wildfire by Hannah Grace

I absolutely adore Icebreaker, so I was thrilled to finally get around to reading Wildfire by Hannah Grace last month. It's definitely more sweet than spicy, as contemporary romances go, but it follows Russ and Aurora as they head to work at the same summer camp after a one night stand. Throughout the summer we follow their ups & downs as they deal with their own family dramas, their blooming friendship, and their struggle with following the no-fraternisation between camp counsellors rule... Another great instalment to the series and a really enjoyable read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Puck Off by Eve Newton

I love a hockey romance and this was one I picked up on 'stuff your kindle' day - it's a reverse harem type book about a woman who's dad owns an ice hockey team in Scotland, and due to his health she has to pack in her London life and take over the club. This is book 1 of 2 so it's setting the scene for how the romance (one woman, three male love interests...) is going to pan out. I'm not in any major rush to read the second one, but I probably will at some point. If you do like a reverse harem trope then it might be one for you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Till Death Do Us Part by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn

I read this as a Netgalley arc and I was honestly pretty disappointed; I read one of Flynn's books in 2023 and really enjoyed it, so I had high hopes for this. I didn't really like or connect with many of the characters, though I liked the winery setting. The twist was genuinely SO far fetched as to be completely ridiculous, and I was left with more questions than answers. Honestly a very odd book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nothing Like the Movies by Lynn Painter

This was another arc, and I adored Better Than the Movies when I read that so I was excited for the long-awaited sequel. Again it just fell a little bit short, and it was a bit of a slog to get through it which was such a shame. We're following Liz and Wes, now at college, off the back of their break up. He's absolutely desperate to win her back and she's content to focus on building a career during her studies. I do like a second chance romance but this one just wasn't quite as good as I hoped! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Here For The Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen & Lydia Wang

I really enjoyed this sapphic romance, which follows a straight dating show (very Bachelor-esque) - only two of the contestants are more interested in each other than the man who's affections they're trying to win. I thought it was a bit long with some repetitive bits that could definitely have been edited out, but overall it was a fun story and one I really enjoyed. Not much spice but you can't win 'em all! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pumpkin Spice and All Things Nice by Laura Greenwood

Hate, hate, double hate. I wanted to try reading some fantasy as sooo many people love it, so I'm easing myself with some urban fantasy books I picked up during the fantasy edition of 'stuff your kindle' day. This was pointless - only a couple of chapters, introducing the story but without much in the way of substance. It's about a witch who runs a coffee shop and takes delivery of an enchanted teapot; the story does sound like it's going to be good but just make it one book instead of splitting it into 12 mini ones?! ⭐️⭐️

Semester Aboard by Elizabeth Kirke

This was another urban fantasy book I picked up to ease myself in, and I really enjoyed it - firstly, it's set on a cruise ship which duh, I love. It follows a girl on her semester aboard who unexpectedly finds herself surrounded by magics, and discovers that she is a witch herself. Disaster strikes in the form of a vampire on board - the story has a lot of heart, found family, excitement and maybe one too many fight scenes. I definitely really enjoyed it and I think I'll be continuing the series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Autumn in Sycamore Park by C P Ward

Another 'stuff your kindle' day pick, I thought this was okay. I thought it would feel a lot cosier than it did, but it was just a standard British kinda-romance book following a primary school teacher who has left her ex and started a new life at a new school in a whole new area. From making new friends to navigating her class of small children and developing a crush on the park keeper, there should be a lot going on but ultimately it just felt a little bit on the boring side. A shame! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Daydream by Hannah Grace

The third and final instalment in the Maple Hills series did NOT come to play. Following quiet Henry, who appeared in the earlier books in the series, and Halle, a bookish queen, this is a gorgeous tale of two people helping each other overcome struggles while falling unexpectedly in love - with a healthy dash of hockey, spice, and partying! Really really loved this and am so sad the series has come to an end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

What are you reading in October? I really need to start getting through my Autumn readathon picks that I'm taking part in with the girlies in Ellen's discord, so that'll hopefully make up most of my TBR!
