All I want for Christmas is... relationship realness

I touched on this a bit on Twitter at the end of November, but for real I just wanna say you cannot judge someone else's relationship. You don't know the ins and outs of it; you can advise and if someone tells you all the gory details then so be it, but you don't know every conversation that's occurred between two people and you don't know what they laugh about in bed at night, what they argue about at 8am, who does the dishes and who farts the most.

Somebody - and I'm not gonna name names because they don't deserve the traffic, frankly - said they think it's unhealthy for two people in a relationship to spend "so much" time together, or something along those lines. It may or may not have been aimed at me and my girlfriend, but we do spend a lot of time together. We live together (albeit at my parents' for now) and we go to the same uni, although she's in more often than I am, and we go to blogging events together. We have mutual friends who we enjoy hanging out with, together.

And you know what? I'm perfectly happy with that and as far as I know, so is she. Sam makes me laugh harder than anyone; we have inside jokes that other people just don't find funny, and we enjoy the same things - we like the same TV shows and bands and films for the most part - and we both blog. Sam knows how to comfort me better than anyone else; Sam will straighten my hair for me if I don't want to do it; Sam will play with my dog while I do work and Sam will walk to Morrisons with me when I'm craving a tiny cheese and ham pizza.

I can function pretty well without Sam but honestly, being along is more boring than being with someone who makes you laugh, makes you smile, tests your patience, butters the bread while you grate the cheese. It's more boring to snuggle your Hank the octopus teddy than it is to curl up with the person you love most in the world and feel their heart beating against your shoulder.

Basically, I can spend time without Sam and not fall apart - but if we don't have to be without each other then why would we?

  1. Katy, this was beautiful! I'm exactly the same with my boyfriend. We've lived together for pretty much the entirety of our relationship (4 years strong!) and I absolutely love spending so much time together. I feel like spending a lot of time together makes you stronger as a unit, as well as time apart, so I'm certain you and Sam have a great, solid relationship.

  2. I don't get to see my boyfriend much as I work away but I would bloody love to do those small little things, like walk to Morrisons to get pizza, on a more regular basis. Each to their own - to whoever said people shouldn't be together constantly, you do you boo. You and Sam have a perf relationship and I think it's so lush that you're able to spend so much time together and still love every minute of it! xx
